Bowers Museum Event Poster

This project was for a class assignment: create a poster for an event of our choosing, using a pattern technique to form the letters. The idea was inspired by Marian Bantjes' pattern-tuned letterforms. I chose the Buddhist Painting exhibition by Shashi Dhoj Tulachan at the Bowers Museum as my event. I picked this exhibition because my family is Buddhist, and the art reminded me of pieces I've seen in temples growing up. I was also drawn to the colors and intricate brush strokes in Tulachan's work. To build the pattern, I zoomed into the clouds and fire in one of the paintings, roughly traced a few shapes, and arranged them into a repeatable design. For the poster, the composition and color palette were based directly on the painting itself.

Tools: Illustrator (vectors and letterforms), InDesign (poster layout)

Final thoughts: Honestly, I'm a little disappointed the letters aren't more prominent or easy to see in the final piece — but I think the concept has potential.
